Doster was selected
to perform a complete exterior and interior restoration of St. Joseph’s
Chapel, located in the center of campus at Spring Hill College. Doster was selected to perform the
restoration of the 100-year old Chapel and
bring back, out of the old
neglected structure, the charm and exquisite characteristics which the
Chapel held for so many years.
The
project took place in two phases: the exterior restoration and
the interior restoration, with the exterior phase first. This
included stripping the exterior completely and repairing all the
structural and non-structural cracks. All ornamental copper,
terracotta coping stones and ridges were repaired, reworked, and cleaned
to reveal their original beauty. The Chapel also received a new roof
system consisting of extensive
repair to the structural roof framing supporting it. A water
intrusion problem, existing since original
construction, was eliminated by installing a new flashing and gutter
system constructed from heavy gauge copper. The exterior stucco was painted
with mineral base paint to allow the proper escape for moisture through
its surface while also maintaining the exterior's
natural qualities.
The
extensive interior restoration included the construction of new areas
including a new choir loft, bride’s room,
meeting space, and reconciliation room specifically for the use of taking confession with the priest. All floors were reconstructed,
including granite tile, slate flooring at the Altar, and heart pine
wood floors throughout the building interior. The site was
fully landscaped as well.
