In 2005, Hurricane Katrina caused a tremendous amount of
damage to this landmark hotel, and PCH Hotels & Resorts, Inc., funded by
the Retirement Systems of Alabama, selected Doster to be the
construction manager on this reconstruction project.
The Grand Hotel is comprised of nine buildings, all scattered throughout
15-20 acres. Built in 1847, the historic hotel has survived through
several hurricanes and fires, has come to the aid of Confederate
soldiers in 1864 when used as a hospital, and has served as training
ground for the Army Air Corps during World War II. Unfortunately,
Hurricane Katrina caused this severe damage just two years after a $50
million renovation, which included all guest rooms, a European-style
spa, a tropical pool, and two renovated golf courses.
Since three quarters of one side of the resort is on the Mobile Bay, the
majority of the damage was water damage. Every building, generator,
switch gear, and transformer was covered with water. In fact, there was
eight feet of water in the lobby of the hotel's main building. The
damage has caused the entire facility to be shut down for one year while
repairs are taking place.
