Carver High School
Birmingham, Alabama
Located on a 60-acre site, the five-story, 290,000 square foot George Washington Carver High School serves 2,000 students. Doster Construction was the contractor for all three phases of this high tech replacement facility. Doster followed the site preparation contractor with the five-story concrete frame classroom structure. Subsequently, Doster was the successful low bidder on the cafeteria phase, and also the final phase for the competition and practice gymnasiums and dressing rooms. All phases finished on schedule.
The exterior brick pre-cast façade features a large expanse of glass that allows commanding views of the Birmingham skyline and the surrounding hills and oak trees. The building is roofed with a standing seam metal roof.
The interior features granite floors in the main entrance and a state-of-the-art, two-story multi-media center in the middle of the 70 classrooms. Finishes are painted concrete block partition walls and vinyl composition floors. The classrooms include chemistry and physics labs, hair dressing studios and drafting rooms with full computer facilities.
A separate 27,000 square foot building houses the kitchen and cafeteria areas, equipped with a food court including six server counters and seating for 500 students. One wall in the cafeteria prominently displays a 20' x 14' painted mural of George Washington Carver who is surrounded by students reflecting various career choices.
Also featured in this project are two gymnasiums; one for competition and the other for physical education. Both include locker rooms and coaches offices. The campus also has areas for music and chorus.
The $37 million project finished in 2001.
