Miles College Brown Hall Historic Renovation
Fairfield, AL
The original Brown Hall building on the Miles College campus was built in 1927. The $3.5 million project was completed in just over a year and included renovating the entire building to the Historical Society requirements. The exterior is comprised of brick and limestone panels, limestone entry steps and large columns at the front entrance.
The 20,650 square foot interior boasts high end finishes such as terrazzo floors and plaster walls. The auditorium, with its original brass chandeliers and large windows, was renovated using the original glass, frames and hardware. The new corridor terrazzo floors on all three floors were topped with a new epoxy terrazzo coating to match the existing floors. The doors throughout the building are striking oak panel doors with view lights made to match the original ones. Even though these doors were made to match the existing ones in appearance, they also met the fire rating as required by current code. The existing plaster walls and ceilings were reworked to match the look of the 1920s and the detailed crown molding.
The remainder of the project was updating to meet current standards including VCT and carpet floors, oak wainscot at the third floor President's Suite and oak cabinets, desks and trim. The building was also completely gutted of all the mechanical, electrical and plumbing work and updated with new fixtures, wiring, and a new mechanical system.
