The Surgery Center of Huntsville
Huntsville, Alabama
Doster Construction Company was selected to complete a multiple phase project which included a new four-story, 60,000 square foot addition and renovation to the Huntsville Surgery Center. The addition included patient rooms, nursing stations, pre-op and recovery areas, a fully functioning kitchen and dining area, administrative offices, an entrance, lobby area and waiting areas. Phases II, III and IV consisted of renovations to the existing building. This project had many challenges including infection control, limited parking and storage, and scheduling work around the functional surgery center.
In phase I, Doster had to build a temporary entrance and the existing entrance had to be blocked off since it was in the middle of the construction zone. In addition, parking was a big concern. A large section of the parking lot had to be blocked off and traffic re-routed around the construction area.
As part of construction, drilled piers had to be installed. There was great concern about the amount of noise and vibrations during this portion of construction affecting ongoing surgeries. It was determined that drilling could proceed with extra precaution to ensure that it did not disturb the surgery center operations. Being an operational surgery center, there was extensive coordination with the tie-ins in order for construction to happen during non-operating hours: This meant starting on a Friday night and working through the weekend. All efforts were coordinated with the owner and all systems were backed up and running the following Monday morning for operation.
Doster Construction Company completed the Huntsville Surgery Center on time and on budget, meeting additions and challenges along the way. The updated surgery center provides "excellence in outpatient surgery." The facility offers eight general operating rooms, four eye surgical suites, and one breast center special procedures room. It is unlike any other facility in its area with access to the most sophisticated computer driven equipment.
This project was the recipient of an Associated Builders and Contractors Alabama Chapter Excellence in Construction Award in 2008.
