New Men's Dormitory - Miles College
The new men's dormitory at Miles College in Fairfield, Alabama is a 55,000 square foot, 108-room, four-story dormitory constructed out of concrete, block, steel and coreslab flooring for the systems elevated slabs.
The exterior of the facility is striking with brick veneer, EIFS façade, pre-hung wood windows, large columns framing the lobby entrance and an asphalt shingle roof. The building is divided into wings with each containing an elevator, a residence room, and a laundry room. Each student room is equipped with a private bathroom The first floor of the lobby building contains a kitchen, a living room with a gas log fireplace, a receptionist area, an office for the dormitory director and restroom facilities. The second story of the lobby consists of a reading room, a large computer room and restroom facilities. The dormitory is the largest structure on the Miles College Campus and houses over 200 students. In addition, the building is fully sprinkled and contains a diesel fire pump for emergency situations.
Open communication between the team and owner was the key to the success of the project. Because of the owner's tight budget, the project team went through extensive review to generate value engineering items totaling $500,000 in savings to the owner. Doster was still able to maintain the schedule without compromising size or quality.
