October is Careers in Construction Month, a time to highlight the people who build our communities and the many career opportunities available across the industry.
Construction offers much more than one career path. From project management and field operations to preconstruction, estimating, safety, accounting, marketing and other corporate roles, it takes people with different skills and experiences working together to bring a project from an idea to reality.
At Doster, those career paths look different for everyone. Some team members get their start through internships or right out of college. Others bring experience from different industries or find a new direction after taking on a different project, role or responsibility. There isn’t one prescribed route for building a career in construction.
It Starts with People
No matter the role, construction is a people business. Every project brings together owners, designers, subcontractors, trade partners and project teams, and the relationships built along the way are often just as meaningful as the finished project.
Conn Crabtree, Vice President and Division Manager at Doster, offers this advice to those early in their careers:
“Relationships are everything. As I look back on my favorite projects that I have been a part of, it has very little to do with the building type or location and a lot more to do with who I got to work with. The work is always going to be challenging, but the reward to me is being a part of a team of people who worked hard together, respected and supported each other and were ultimately successful together.”
That focus on people is at the heart of Doster’s purpose of Building Lasting Relationships and an important part of building a career in this industry.
Opportunities to Grow
One of the advantages of a career in construction is that there is always something new to learn. Each project brings different challenges, teams and experiences. A new assignment may introduce another side of the business, while taking on additional responsibility can develop skills that lead to opportunities down the road.
Growth doesn’t always follow a straight line. Being willing to ask questions, learn from others and step outside your comfort zone can be just as important as knowing exactly where you want your career to go.
From internships and early-career positions to opportunities for experienced professionals, construction provides room to continue learning and growing throughout a career.
Find Your Path in Construction
Careers in construction are as varied as the people who choose them. Whether your strengths are solving problems, leading teams, working in the field, managing details, building relationships or supporting the business behind the scenes, there are opportunities to find a path that fits.
Throughout Careers in Construction Month, we’ll be highlighting some of those paths and sharing stories from the people behind Doster.
